Fake and Unauthorised vehicle registration (plate) numbers : FRSC seizes 350 vehicles in one month.

Special operation, which began on February 3rd 2025, targeted vehicles with fake registration numbers.

FRSC said that the nationwide operation will not only enhance road safety but also national security.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has impounded 350 vehicles since it commenced a special operation to clamp down on illegal use of number plates and fake vehicle registration numbers.

The special operation, which began on Monday February 3rd 2025, targeted vehicles with fake registration numbers and illegal use of number plates by private, commercial, government and diplomatic vehicles.

“We impounded 350 vehicles in one month of the operation,” the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, told newsmen in an interview on Monday in Abuja.

“We impounded vehicles using fake diplomatic numbers, unrecognised number plates,” he said, adding that “We don’t know where they were printed from and we don’t know who gave them the permission.”

“The initial intervention, which began in Abuja, targeted vehicles bearing fake diplomatic numbers, unrecognised number plates, and other related infractions.”

“The proliferation of fake number plates, poses significant security risks, undermining law enforcement efforts and compromising national security.”

Ogungbemide said that the Corps launched the nationwide operation not only to enhance road safety but also national security

“The enforcement is still ongoing. You know it is not the issue of road safety alone. It goes into security too because a situation where you have proliferation of number plates all over the place is a major issue when it comes to the issue of security.”

The FRSC spokesman urged vehicle owners to acquire legal vehicle number plates through the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS), stressing that the process was simple and affordable.
