The title of the most expensive Maserati car so far has been held by a white MC12 from 2005, as at the Mecam auction in Indianapolis, the new owner paid 8,692,454 euros for the two-seater, under whose bodywork lies Ferrari mechanic Enzo, which is significantly more than the previous record from 2013, when the new owner paid 4.65 million euros for a 1955 Maserati 300S Sports-Racing Spider.

Maserati introduced the distinctively long, wide and low MC12 at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, and from 2004 to the end of 2005, only 50 examples were produced that could be registered and driven on public roads, as the derivative based on Ferrari’s two-seater Enzo was created primarily due to Maserati’s successful return to the FIA GT Championship.

The example that changed hands in Indianapolis was produced in 2005 in the second series (25 cars) and has since covered only 515 kilometers. Underneath the carbon bodywork is Ferrari’s centrally located 6-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine (M144A) that develops 630 horsepower and 652 Nm of peak torque.

Slightly/intentionally weaker than the version Ferrari installed in the Enzo (660 hp), the engine’s potential in the MC12 environment is sufficient for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and over 330 km/h. The power is transmitted to the rear axle by a 6-speed robotized gearbox (Cambiocorsa), which is just one of the many mechanical components that only racing cars bring with them.
