Audi Gives Reasons Why The Nuvolari Uses A V8

Despite fears that electrification would phase out high-performance engines, Audi’s new Nuvolari proves that luxury brands are sticking with combustion power to satisfy enthusiast demand.

Rather than transitioning to a purely electric powertrain, the Audi Nuvolari, which is priced at approximately $700,000, features a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine paired with three electric motors to generate a combined output of 987 horsepower. Utilizing a plug-in hybrid architecture comparable to that of the Lamborghini Temerario, the vehicle underscores a strategic commitment to internal combustion. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner, in an interview with Automotive News, articulated the rationale behind the continued integration of high-performance engines in supercars, noting, “The higher the segment is, the more the enthusiast still loves the combustion engine.”

Döllner notes that while EVs suit the mass market, they gain less traction in luxury segments. Unlike efficiency-focused hybrids like the Toyota RAV4, the Nuvolari uses electric motors to boost supercar performance. This preference for combustion explains why brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini continue to integrate high-performance engines into their flagship models.

Bugatti’s $4.1M Tourbillon sold out instantly, featuring an 8.3L V16 and 1,775 hp. Like Audi, Bugatti compares these supercars to luxury mechanical watches: while EVs offer superior efficiency like digital watches, the wealthy prioritize the theater and craftsmanship of combustion engines.

High-performance combustion engines will remain a staple in the luxury market as automakers balance enthusiast demand with electrification. While Italy advocates for regulatory exemptions for boutique manufacturers and synthetic fuels offer a potential future, the industry continues to prioritize internal combustion for high-end performance. The Audi Nuvolari will be limited to 499 units with 2027 deliveries, while a separate all-electric sports car is slated for 2028.
