The Audi TT And R8 Successors Could Be Porsche-Based
Audi is developing a new compact electric sports car based on Porsche’s platform as a successor to the Audi TT.
With the arrival of the Nuvolari, you could almost forget that Audi is also working on another sporty model. In September of last year, Audi presented the Concept C. That was not only the showcase for a new design language for Audi, but also a preview of a new sports car. The Audi Nuvolari, which was presented later, showed visual similarities to the Concept C, but is positioned distinctly higher in the market than the intended production version of the Concept C. There is a difference between the two not only in terms of positioning; they also have little in common regarding powertrains. The Nuvolari is a beastly plug-in hybrid, while the production version of the Audi Concept C will feature fully electric powertrains.
During a presentation of the quarterly figures, Porsche CFO Jochen Breckner revealed that Audi will use the electric platform of the new 718 Boxster and Cayman for the ‘C-Sport’ and that it will profit from it next year. In short: the spiritual successor to the Audi TT will be an EV built on a Porsche platform. This marks a significant break with the TTs: they always shared their technical basis with compact mid-size cars from the Volkswagen Group, such as the Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf, Seat Leon, and Skoda Octavia. The Concept C was 4.52 meters long. If that length is indicative of the production version, you can expect a substantial model. At 4.5 meters in length, the new muscle car would be longer than the previous TT and R8, but shorter than the 4.8-meter-long Nuvolari.
The relatively compact, sporty Audi appears to be getting a Targa roof, making it the first Audi ever with such a removable roof. Audi likely hopes to eliminate the need for a convertible version by making the model a Targa.
