Honda’s New e-AWD System Makes The AWD Odyssey And Accord Possible
Honda has long relied on mechanical AWD systems even as its lineup transitioned to hybrids. Now, the company is finally developing its own e-AWD system, which utilizes a rear-mounted electric motor to power the wheels, aligning it with competitors.
This is set to change, as Honda has officially announced the development of its inaugural e-AWD system. As an integral component of the brand’s next-generation “Honda Hybrid” platform, the system is already finalized and is expected to be integrated into the upcoming generation of vehicle models.
Honda is developing a global e-AWD system for its next-gen hybrids. By replacing the mechanical driveshaft with a rear electric motor, the compact design increases cabin space and cargo capacity, improves fuel efficiency, and provides quicker throttle response. While initially for midsize vehicles, the system could eventually expand to smaller models across Honda’s lineup.
While Honda has indicated that this technology will initially debut in midsize models, it is unlikely to replace the sophisticated VTM-4 system currently utilized in the brand’s TrailSport lineup. Given Honda’s strategic focus on establishing the credibility of its off-road-oriented models, this new e-AWD system will likely be reserved for the brand’s more conventional, street-focused vehicle offerings.
The next-gen Honda Odyssey is the likely debut for this e-AWD system, helping it compete with the Toyota Sienna. Integrating e-AWD into the Accord would also challenge the AWD Camry Hybrid. Other models, including the CR-V, HR-V, rumored Accord Crosstour, and Civic, are strong candidates for this technology as Honda expands its lineup.
