Toyota Recalls Over 200,000 Sienna Minivans Due To Defective Second-Row Seatbacks
Toyota is recalling 228,367 Sienna Hybrid minivans (2022–2026) due to a defect where second-row seatbacks may fail during a crash. Owners will be notified in December for a free software update or seatback replacement.
The NHTSA report notes that Toyota’s Sienna Hybrid seatbelt pretensioners can cause the second-row recliner to disengage during certain frontal crashes. Toyota identified this risk during internal sled testing and will provide free software updates or seatback replacements starting in December.
From January to November 2025, Toyota conducted sled tests on modified seat assemblies, revealing that the second-row recliner could disengage. An investigation through August 2026 identified internal friction as the cause. After validating these findings with crash tests in September and October, Toyota issued a voluntary recall. ![]()
Dealers are aware of the Toyota Sienna recall, with owner notifications for the remedy expected in December. Most affected vehicles require a free SRS ECU software update, though roughly 200 units (2022–2025) will need their second-row seatbacks replaced. All repairs are free of charge.
