Ford Mustang Sales Continues To Drop Drastically
Ford Mustang sales fell 31.6 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to sales data released by Ford. In the first three months of 2024, the company sold 13,707 units of this model, which has decreased to just 9,377 units this year.
In fact, sales of the gasoline Mustang are so poor that the all-electric Mustang Mach-E is currently outperforming it. Ford has sold 11,607 of the electric crossovers so far in 2025.
As Motor1 reports, there are a number of possible reasons for the Mustang’s decline in sales. The most obvious reason is price. The base Ecoboost coupe starts at $33,515. While that sounds reasonable, most people can no longer justify owning a second vehicle because wages haven’t kept up with inflation. And owning a two-door, rear-wheel drive coupe as their only car isn’t feasible for the average American.
Things get even tougher if you want a V8. The cheapest eight-cylinder version, the GT coupe, starts at $47,055. At that price, the Mustang has to contend with competition like the Nissan Z and Toyota Supra.
Well, it’s time. As The Drive points out, the US has had a particularly cold first two months of the year. Cold temperatures don’t exactly attract people to dealerships, nor do they entice buyers to buy sports cars. The return of the Shelby GT500 version could be what the Mustang needs to bounce back.
The rest of Ford’s portfolio isn’t doing much better. Sales of the Explorer and Expedition are down 19.1 percent and 37.5 percent, respectively. Sales of the Maverick, E-Series vans, and Transit are also down from the previous year. The F-Series line is up 24.5 percent, though sales of the F-150 Lightning are down 7.2 percent. Overall, the Ford brand is down 1.2 percent in the first quarter of 2025.
