Honda Discontinues The e:Ny1 Electric SUV In Europe

Electrification plans once again “collided” with market reality. The Honda e:Ny1, the brand’s only all-electric model in Europe, is being withdrawn from the market just three years after its arrival. The decision seems sudden, but the numbers reveal why it was made.

This compact SUV arrived in 2023 as an electric alternative to the Honda HR-V, but despite Honda’s reputation and solid technical underpinnings, it failed to attract buyers. Based on a platform developed in cooperation with Chinese partner Dongfeng, the e:Ny1 is actually close to the e:NS1 and e:NP1 models sold in China. In Europe, however, the car was extremely expensive, which, in combination with “Chinese genetics,” failed to convince buyers.

Even a significant price cut didn’t help. In Germany, meanwhile, the starting price dropped from 47,590 to a more reasonable 38,990 euros, but sales remained symbolic; only 105 copies were sold last year. In such circumstances, the decision to withdraw the model becomes a logical move.

Technically speaking, the e:Ny1 was not a bad car. The electric motor develops 204 hp, and the battery with a capacity of 68.8 kWh enables a range of up to 412 kilometers according to the WLTP. The interior with a large 15.1-inch screen and a modern interface also did not stand out from the competition. The problem was in the relationship between price and supply, especially at the moment when European and Chinese manufacturers began to offer cheaper and more advanced alternatives.

Withdrawal from Europe is part of a broader strategy. Honda has already announced the withdrawal of several global electric projects, including models developed in cooperation with Sony. This does not mean that he is giving up on electrification but that he is changing his approach.
