‘It Is Criminal’: Lagos Govt Cracks Down On Car Spotters Stopping Luxury Cars For Money On Lekki-Epe Expressway

The Lagos State Government has vowed to intensify its crackdown on individuals who stop, harass and extort motorists, particularly drivers of luxury vehicles, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The move comes as a major blow to Lagos car spotters, some of whom have been accused of stopping high-end vehicles on the busy corridor in pursuit of videos, photos or money from motorists.

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, described the activity as criminal, stressing that the government would not tolerate harassment or extortion on its roads.

Speaking on Nigeria Info FM, Hamzat said the state had already begun taking action against offenders and would continue clearing the Lekki-Epe axis of unauthorised individuals.

“That is criminal, and therefore, we will not allow it. So, we will take a lot of them off the street,” Hamzat stated.

According to the Deputy Governor, several suspects have already been arrested, while some have been brought before the Magistrate Court.

He also disclosed that Lagos’ extensive network of surveillance cameras along the Lekki-Epe Expressway has been instrumental in identifying and tracking individuals involved in the activities.

“A lot of people have been arrested, really. A lot of cameras are also on that road and people have been seen… some people are in the Magistrate Court today,” Hamzat added.

The development could significantly affect the activities of car spotters who frequent the Lekki-Epe corridor, particularly those who stop or obstruct luxury vehicles while attempting to capture content—some of which has also been featured in Autojosh publications.

With increased surveillance and enforcement, Lagos authorities are making it clear that car spotting will not be tolerated when it involves stopping motorists, obstructing traffic, harassment or extortion.
