Like Subaru, Toyota GR86 Gets Update For 2027 Model Year
Late last month, it was announced that the Subaru BRZ had been refreshed in the domestic market, and in the meantime, Toyota’s press service revealed several updates to its GR86 coupe twin.
There’s only one exterior change: the Solid Gray body color, which was offered for six months in 2017, has been revived and is now available as an option. Inside, the top-of-the-line RZ trim level gets higher-quality materials, redesigned switches, and revised red-and-black accents.
Technology changes include a modified throttle control, which improves handling “in situations that require delicate acceleration control,” such as cornering, driving on low-friction surfaces, or on wet or snowy roads. In addition, the electric power steering system has been modernized based on experience gained from the Super Taikyu racing series. The changes have also eliminated instability during fast cornering and on uneven surfaces.
Toyota GR86 versions with a 6-speed manual transmission have received “smoother and less stressful entry into fast corners” – the “shift” control from fifth to fourth gear has been modified, which allows for a smoother transition from deceleration to cornering. In addition, the EyeSight driver assistance system will now use three cameras instead of two: a wide-angle stereo camera and an ultra-wide-angle monocular camera provide a wider field of view, which means a more timely response from the system and assistants.
The technology of this updated two-door model is standard: under the hood is a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine, producing 235 hp and 250 Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Interestingly, the refreshed Toyota GR86 is significantly cheaper than the Subaru BRZ: the base RC model will cost from 2,936,000 yen (16,010 euros), while the top-of-the-line RZ will cost at least 3,518,000 yen (19,185 euros). For comparison, the Subaru BRZ costs from 3,377,000 yen (18,415 euros).
