Subaru Quits Selling Petrol-Powered Cars In Europe
For decades, the Japanese brand Subaru has been synonymous with permanent four-wheel drive and boxer engines. But the noise of their petrol engines will die down in Europe. According to Electrive, the phase-out will begin this year, when the Subaru Outback will be discontinued in Europe.
According to the German automobile magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the Impreza, Crosstrek and Forester models will follow in 2027, which will finally end the era of these Japanese cars with gasoline engines and iconic boxers in Europe.
At Subaru, they believe that it is economically unjustified to invest in adapting gasoline engines to the stricter Euro 7 standards. For a manufacturer that operates in a market niche with limited sales volume, the costs of obtaining European homologation have become simply too much of a burden.
Initially, the brand’s European offer will consist exclusively of three electric models: Solterra, Uncharted and E-Outback, developed in cooperation with Toyota.
At Subaru, they are also working on their own platform for electric vehicles. It is expected to be ready in 2029 and will use Panasonic batteries and Aisin propulsion systems, developing 510 hp.
Petrol engines will continue to be available in other markets, such as the US.
