40 Years After The First M3, BMW Builds Its 1 Millionth M VehicleBMW Group has reached a major milestone in its performance-car history, producing its one-millionth BMW M vehicle at BMW Group Plant Munich, exactly 40 years after the first BMW M3 entered the market.

Finished in the striking BMW Individual Fire Orange III paintwork, the milestone M3 Competition was officially handed over by Peter Weber, Head of BMW Group Plant Munich, to Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M, during a ceremony at the historic Munich plant.

“The one-millionth BMW M vehicle shows that these values are still very much appreciated by our customers, 40 years after the market launch of the first BMW M3,” says Franciscus van Meel.

The milestone carries special significance for the Munich plant, which has been producing the current-generation M3 since 2020, maintaining a direct connection with a model whose history is closely tied to BMW’s headquarters.

The one-millionth M vehicle also marks a significant step towards the electric future of BMW M, as the Munich plant is set to become the production site for the first fully electric BMW M3, which will use technology from the company’s Neue Klasse architecture.

“This motivates us to continuously develop our BMW M high-performance vehicle portfolio based on BMW M Neue Klasse technology, including fully-electric models, in line with our core brand promise,” Franciscus van Meel said, referring to the planned first fully electric BMW M3.

BMW is investing around €650 million in transforming the Munich facility into a production site exclusively for fully electric vehicles. The brand says its main Munich plant will produce only fully electric vehicles from 2027.
