Lagos NURTW ‘Agbero’ Generates N123bn Annually – Report

The Lagos chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), locally called agberos, generates about N123.08bn annually.

According to a ICIR, N3,000, N600, and N1,800 were levied on each buses, motorcycles, and tricycles respectively, on a daily basis.

The money amounts to 29.4 per cent of Lagos State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of N418.99 billion in 2020.

The money is bigger than the IGR of oil-rich Rivers State, whose its IGR was N117.19 billion in 2020.

It is enough to service the annual budget of Nasarawa, Niger, and Yobe states put together.

The money, realised through levies on passenger vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles, amounts to 29.4 per cent of Lagos State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of N418.99 billion in 2020.

The money is bigger than the IGR of oil-rich Rivers State, whose its IGR was N117.19 billion in 2020. It is enough to service the annual budget of Nasarawa, Niger, and Yobe states put together.

The report showed that the sum of N3,000, N600, and N1,800 were levied on at least 75,000 buses, 37,000 motorcycles, and 50,000 tricycles respectively, on a daily basis.

These levies amounts to N82.1bn for buses (danfos), N8.1bn for motorcycles, and N32.9bn for tricycles yearly.

In total, commercial buses, tricyles and motorcycles pay N123.078 billion to agberos in Lagos each year, excluding money paid by taxis, tankers and trailers as there are no relevant data on these categories.

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) says on its website that ‘road taxes’ are among the 25 taxes that are collected by the state government. But there is no evidence on its website that road taxes are being collected by the state government.

When Monsurat Amasa was contacted to provide details of transport revenue in Lagos, the Head of Corporate Communications of the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) did not reply.
