The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), a Lagos State Government agency under the Ministry of Transportation which began operations in 2003, is celebrating 20 years since inception.





The bill setting up the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) was signed into law on 13 January 2002 by the then Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (1999 – 2007).

LAMATA oversees a wide range of transport planning, policies, and public transport infrastructure implementation in Lagos, and the Lagos Blue Line stands as a testament to the agency’s dedication to improving urban mobility.

“It’s our anniversary week… kudos to the agency behind the Lagos Blue & Red rail Lines!, LAMATA said, adding that “As we move into another decade, we are poised to seeing through the implementation our Interchange projects at Mile 2 and Marina.”

Under the visionary leadership of Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, LAMATA has spearheaded the Lagos Blue Line project and the soon to be launched Red Line rail project, a groundbreaking initiative that will revolutionize urban mobility in the megacity.

Over the past two decades, LAMATA has not only spearheaded the groundbreaking Lagos Rail Mass Transit projects, but has also played a crucial role in the success of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
