Mercedes-Benz Updates The E- Class With New Engines
Mercedes-Benz is expanding the range with a new petrol engine and a new diesel engine. With both engines, we wonder why you would choose them. This has mainly to do with the engines already available for the E-Class.
The Mercedes-Benz is available with two new engines. One of them is found in a new variant of the E-Class called the E200. As the E200, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class features a mild-hybrid 2.0 four-cylinder petrol engine with 204 hp as standard. This is supported by 23 electric horsepower. With this new base engine, the E-Class is certainly not slow. It accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 240 km/h. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan is available as the E200 starting at €72,610. The E-Class Estate with this powertrain costs at least €75,536. In both cases, you get the Business Solution trim level. Naturally, they are also available as the more expensive, but more richly equipped Business Solution Luxury and Business Solution AMG.
The E200 is most challenged by the E300e. This is a plug-in hybrid powertrain that also features a 204 hp four-cylinder petrol engine but is backed by a 129 hp electric motor. This interplay gives the E300e a system output of 313 hp and 550 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. More relevant is the 19.53 kWh battery, which provides the E-Class with an electric range of 115 kilometers. Fast charging is possible at 55 kW. And then there is the price. The E-Class E300e is faster, more powerful, can drive electrically, and is not more expensive but cheaper than the new mild-hybrid E200. The E-Class Sedan is available as an E300e starting at €69,092, and the E-Class Estate at €69,949 (temporarily: €69,450). The towing capacity of the two powertrains is identical at 2,100 kilograms.
Does the E200 then have no advantage at all over the E300e? Yes, it does. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 is actually lighter (1,815 kilos) than the E300e (2,190 kilos). In addition, the mild-hybrid E200 has a more spacious boot due to the absence of a large battery pack. It can accommodate 540 liters, versus 370 liters for the plug-in. The rear of the E-Class Estate E200 holds 615 liters, versus 460 liters for the E300e.
Also a new diesel engine
The new diesel engine that Mercedes-Benz is bringing to the E-Class is under the hood of the new E200d. This is a 163 hp mild-hybrid 2.0 four-cylinder engine supported by up to 23 electric horsepower. The E-Class Sedan is available as the E200d starting at €75,824, and the E-Class Estate starting at €78,446.
Here too, you can get into a plug-in hybrid alternative for less money. The E-Class is also available as the E300de with a system output of 313 hp and 700 Nm and an electric range of 115 kilometers. The E-Class Sedan is available as the E300de from €72,589 and the E-Class Estate from €71,629. Naturally, the plug-in hybrids are heavier than the E200ds and have a smaller boot space.
