Mercedes Declared The Largest Offensive In History
The arrival of the new, fully electric Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ technology marks the beginning of what the company calls the biggest production offensive in its history. In the next three years, until 2028, Mercedes plans to launch more than 40 new models while working to significantly reduce production costs.
The move is part of a broader strategy that includes a controversial shift away from an exclusive focus on luxury to more affordable, higher-volume vehicles to strengthen the company’s financial position.
In order to prepare for the upcoming wave of new models, Mercedes has invested more than two billion euros in its European factories. After starting production of the new CLA electric model at the factory in Raštat, the brand will start production of the GLC EQ model in Bremen, as well as the all-electric C-class EQ in Kecskemet, Hungary.
At the same time, the Sindelfingen plant will begin production of new electric models from the Mercedes-AMG division, including the production version of the recently unveiled AMG GT XX concept. Speaking at the launch of the new electric GLC, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said, “With the new electric GLC, the biggest product launch in our company’s history continues to gather momentum.”
Among the less exposed novelties is the VLE, a fully electric luxury MPV developed on the new Van Electric Architecture platform. Designed to carry up to eight passengers, it underlines Mercedes’ intention to cover a wide range of segments. The offer is also being expanded with the electric “baby” G-class SUV, the refreshed S-class, and the new generations of the GLA and GLB models.
As Mercedes ramps up production, it will integrate its MO360 and MO360 Data Platform manufacturing ecosystems into factories. This will enable the creation of “digital twin” sites, where future improvements can be tested and verified before being implemented in real plants.
The company also confirmed its goal of reducing production costs by 10 percent over the period from 2024 to 2027. In addition to digitisation, Mercedes will utilise artificial intelligence, increase the use of renewable energy, and strive for greater efficiency in production and logistics to achieve this goal.
