The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has cautioned inter-state and intra-states commercial bus operators on the outright disregard of COVID-19 protocols or risk maximum consequences.

Kano state sector Commander, CC Zubairu Mato gave this warning during a stakeholder meeting with transport stakeholders. The stakeholders include transport unions, fleet operators and other stakeholders on preventive safety measures against COVID-19 across motor parks in the state. Reminding the transporters of the plan to unveil strict enforcement on compliance to guidelines and regulations, he warned that the meeting was conveyed to serve final notice before sanction.

Mato highlighted the new guidelines and sensitized the stakeholders in attendance. He re-emphasized the need to support the implementation of the new guidelines in their various motor parks and terminus so as to curb the spread of the virus through interstate/intrastate travels.

The stakeholders at the meeting included the NURTW, NARTO, SD Express, Landstar Express, Welfare Express. Others include Association of Luxury Buses Operators of Nigeria, Kano State Transport Authority.  They all promised to ensure compliance with the new policy.

Meanwhile, the Kano Pilgrims Board yesterday commenced the refund of over N418 million deposits of 2020 hajj to intending pilgrims. About 359 out of 1,794 intending pilgrims requested for a refund. This was after Saudi Arabia cancelled international pilgrims for 2020 hajj due to COVID-19. This year’s hajj is scheduled to hold with limited access of 10,000 contingents from Saudi residents. However, about 2.5 million international pilgrims will miss the spiritual journey.

Executive secretary of the board, Muhammad Abba Dambatta told journalists that the exercise covered 10 out of 44 local government areas. He explained that the board had encouraged intending pilgrims to defer their advance fare ahead to 2021. He added that the board has commenced 100 per cent refund of those who chose to recover their deposits. inter-state
