688,946 Nissan Rogue SUVs Have Been Recalled Due To Dashboard Fire Risk

Nissan is recalling 688,946 Rogue SUVs from the model years 2014–2016 due to a fault with the electrical connector for the under-dashboard harness.

Corrosion from water and salt entering through the driver’s footwell could cause the harness to deteriorate, perhaps resulting in fire.

Nissan will begin notifying owners on March 2, and the company has stated that a patch is “in development.”

Salt and water infiltrating the driver’s-side footwell could “wick up the dash-side harness tape and enter the connector” over time, according to Nissan. According to a report submitted with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this might cause a slew of issues (NHTSA). Failure of the driver’s-side power window or power seat controls, activation of the all-wheel-drive system warning light, battery drain, “a burning odor,” smoke under the driver’s-side dash, and, potentially, fire are among the possibilities.

There have been three “unconfirmed occurrences” in U.S. vehicles with no injuries, as well as two “thermal incidents” and two “incidents with localized thermal damage” in Rogue vehicles in Canada, according to the chronology Nissan has submitted with NHTSA.

Only roughly 1% of the recalled vehicles are expected to have the issue, according to Nissan. There were 688,946 Rogues made between 2014 and 2016, with 305,220 built at the Renault Samsung Motors plant in South Korea and 383,726 built in Smyrna, Tennessee. Nissan stated it modified the production process at the end of the 2016 model year, so newer Rogues won’t have the problem, and according to the NHTSA report, no other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles used the same process.

According to the NHTSA investigation, no other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles had the same harness configuration and tape as these earlier Rogues because the production process was changed at the conclusion of the 2016 model year.

Beginning March 2, owners will be contacted. Nissan is still working on a solution to the problem, but it anticipates a fix to be available in the spring. Because the vehicles involved in the recall are no longer covered by warranty, the carmaker said it will contact owners about payment for repairs performed prior to the recall announcement.
