Europe’s Top Brands Pondering A Mega Alliance To Save The Industry

The European car industry is in turmoil. Sales of new cars are lagging and there are also major concerns about how much should be invested in electric cars. After all, sales of these are not going as many manufacturers had anticipated and/or as they had invested in under pressure from the EU. Add to that the competition from China and you have the ingredients for a perfect storm in the European car industry as shareholders are also less confident.
The unrest seems to be a breeding ground for a mega-collaboration because together you are stronger, right? A merger is still too strong a term for now, there are talks about a possible alliance. Stellantis, Renault and BMW are supposed to sit down at the table next week during the Paris Motor Show to discuss the possibilities. There is also supposedly a leader in mind: Luca De Meo. Not an illogical choice, because the Renault Group CEO is also chairman of the European industry association ACEA. Carlos Tavares of Stellantis is heading for his farewell (and possible retirement).
For now, these are still rumours, but where there’s smoke, there’s often fire, even in the automotive industry. An alliance between these three parties would be the largest collaboration in the automotive industry. Of course, it remains to be seen what market authorities think of this. To give you an idea of which car brands would then operate under one hat, we will list them for you: Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, DS, Lancia, Abarth, Maserati, Vauxhall, Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Renault, Dacia, Alpine, BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce.
