Ford To Reduce Working Hours At Its Cologne Plant As EV Demands Are Low
Ford wants to reduce working hours at its Cologne plant. The reason is the disappointing demand for electric cars, which according to Ford is ‘significantly lower than expected’ in Germany.
The manufacturer wants to claim a scheme from the German government. This allows employees to work less temporarily without losing their jobs, with the government usually paying part of the salary.
Ford produces the Explorer and Capri models at its Cologne plant. Ford has already made significant cuts to its workforce in Cologne in recent years. In 2018, nearly 20,000 people worked in the city, this summer that number was around 13,000.
The European Automotive Industry Association ACEA reported last month that sales of fully electric cars in Europe fell in the first nine months of this year. The decline was particularly noticeable in Germany, Europe’s most important car market, where sales fell by as much as 28.6 percent in that period.
