The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) this week conducted a crucial scoping workshop for the state-backed Lagos Green Line project and unveiled the 68-kilometer rail route alignment to the public.
At the workshop, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, disclosed that the Government’s plan is to complete the entire rail project rather than in phases, adding that the long-term goal is to finish it within five years.
During the project’s scoping workshop in Lagos, the Commissioner also highlighted the rail line’s potential to spur transit-oriented development (TOD), stating that the benefits of the rail project will go well beyond reducing traffic.
Also speaking at the workshop, Technical Adviser for Rail Transport, Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga, underscored the vital role the Green Line project will play in improving transportation for Lagos residents.
Okusaga, who represented LAMATA MD, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, assured the audience that individuals affected by the project would be duly compensated and that local communities would benefit from employment opportunities during the construction phase.
Strategically designed to connect with the existing Lagos Blue Line at Marina, the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Green Line from Marina to Lekki Free Zone is projected to carry over 500,000 passengers per day at starting, rising to over a million in 2031.
