Uber To Receive Thousands Of Self-Driving Electric Cars From Volkswagen.
Volkswagen and Uber have agreed to a strategic partnership, with the German automaker set to supply thousands of autonomous electric vehicles for Uber rides in the United States over the next 10 years.
“Testing is expected to begin later this year, with the first commercial launch expected in Los Angeles in 2026,” the US transportation agency said in a press release.
The vehicles are expected to be Volkswagen’s ID Buzz AD model.
The agreement includes Volkswagen’s Hamburg-based autonomous mobility brand MOIA and its US subsidiary Volkswagen ADMT LLC.
“During the initial testing and launch phases, the ID. Buzz AD vehicles will have human operators to help improve the technology and ensure safety,” Uber said.
“Each step will proceed only after the necessary regulatory approvals are obtained.
