Two Cherry Tiggo 9 SUV’s Collided Head-on At 50km/h In Africa’s First Real-world Crash Test

Two Cherry Tiggo 9 SUV’s collided head-on at 50km/h in South Africa in Africa’s first real-world dual-vehicle crash test.
Collision test showcases Tiggo 9’s advanced passive and active safety systems, built to meet global five-star standards.
Chery South Africa says this test provides the most authentic assessment of the Tiggo 9’s safety capabilities.
Tiggo 9 comes equipped with 19 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) designed to make every journey safer.
Chery has staged Africa’s first real-world dual-vehicle crash test in twenty years with two identical Tiggo 9 SUVs colliding in a 50 percent offset head-on impact at 50 km/h (31 mph) in South Africa.
Chery South Africa says this test mirrors one of the country’s most dangerous real-world crash scenarios, providing the most authentic assessment of the Tiggo 9’s safety capabilities.
“South Africa’s high rate of serious road accidents calls for solutions that go beyond the ordinary,” commented Verene Petersen, National Brand and Marketing Manager at Chery South Africa.
“By replicating one of the country’s most dangerous crash scenarios, we’re not only putting the Tiggo 9’s safety systems to the test, but also demonstrating how advanced engineering can play a role in reducing the impact of real-world collisions,” Verene Petersen added.
Part of Chery’s 2025 Global Safety Challenges, this head-on collision test showcases the Tiggo 9’s advanced passive and active safety systems, built to meet global five-star standards.
Chery conducted its test on a long, straight paved road, accurately replicating a high-risk scenario : a 50% offset impact (on the right-hand side of the vehicle) with an oncoming vehicle.
“Both Tiggo 9 vehicles delivered a stellar performance at the safety challenge in South Africa. The body structure, restraint system, fuel system, and rescue system all withstood rigorous tests in every aspect,” said Chery South Africa.
Tiggo 9, the Chinese brand’s new flagship seven-seater SUV, comes equipped with 19 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) designed to make every journey safer.
Prior to this real world-challenge, the Tiggo 9 has already proven its mettle in Chery’s in-house crash tests, including a 100% full-frontal rigid barrier impact test and a demanding 32 km/h side pole impact test.
