Polestar CEO Of Australia Believes PHEV Are The Worst

The CEO of Polestar Australia has openly shared his thoughts on plug-in hybrids in an interview with local media. The CEO of the Geely-owned company is not a fan of cars that combine an internal combustion engine and an electric motor.
Speaking to Drive magazine, Scott Maynard gave a straightforward assessment:
– I think plug-in hybrids are the worst of both worlds. So you have all the complexity of an electric drivetrain, along with all the weight and complexity of a gasoline drivetrain. You don’t have zero emissions; you have increased maintenance requirements because you have all these different systems that need to be maintained independently.
He argues that many owners rarely charge their cars, failing to maximize the benefits of carrying a battery pack. A plug-in hybrid that runs solely on an internal combustion engine will be less efficient than an equivalent vehicle with an internal combustion engine only because of the added weight of the battery. Plug-in hybrids often come with a smaller trunk because the batteries need to be stored somewhere.
Today, Polestar produces exclusively electric vehicles, but the company also once had a plug-in hybrid.
