FCT Flooding : Nyesom Wike Bans Car Dealerships From Abuja Parks, Green Areas
FCT Flooding : FCT Minister Nyesom Wike bans car dealerships from Abuja parks, green areas.
Says the move is part of the administration’s efforts to protect the city’s green spaces and mitigate severe flooding.
Directive follows a torrential downpour across Abuja on Saturday, August 15, which triggered severe flash floods.
Flash floods submerged numerous vehicles, brought major commuter corridors to a total standstill.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate cessation of using green areas, parks, and gardens as car dealership lots, following massive flooding in parts of the capital city over the weekend.
The directive was announced on Wednesday in a statement by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media. This move is part of the administration’s broader efforts to protect the city’s green spaces and mitigate severe flooding.
According to the statement, the Minister decried the converted use of areas designated for parks and recreation—such as the Millennium Park—into car lots. He directed that all unauthorized uses of these spaces be closely monitored to ensure strict compliance.
“This is part of the efforts of the FCT Administration to manage the flooding being experienced in some parts of the Federal Capital City,” the statement read. “Consequently, a Task Force has been set up to enforce this directive.”
Furthermore, the Minister has ordered an immediate investigation into the civil servants responsible for granting illegal approvals that authorized the use of green areas for car dealerships.
The affected civil servants—specifically the Directors of Parks and Recreation, Environmental Protection, Traffic Management, and Urban Affairs—have been formally summoned by the FCT Head of Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan.
This directive follows a torrential downpour across Abuja on Saturday, August 15, 2026, which triggered severe flash floods, submerged numerous vehicles, and brought major commuter corridors to a total standstill.
