Lagos Police Impounds More Than 50 Vehicles For Covered, Missing Number Plates

The Lagos State Police Command on Monday, June 15, impounded over fifty (50) vehicles on the first day of enforcing the ban on covered, obscured, unauthorised and missing vehicle registration plates.

Ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the enforcement drive aims to strengthen security and prevent criminals from concealing their identities.

“We have been warning motorists since last week to display their number plates properly and stop covering them. Today, we have begun enforcement. My officers and I went out this morning and arrested motorists who failed to fix their plate numbers or deliberately covered them,” the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, said while addressing journalists.

According to the Commissioner, the practice of covering or removing vehicle number plates hinders effective policing, surveillance, and vehicle tracking during crime investigations.

“The dangers inherent in covering or not properly fixing number plates include the use of such vehicles for criminal activities, including evasion of law enforcement and difficulty in tracking stolen vehicles,” he said.

Insecurity: FCT Police To Arrest Tinted Vehicle Owners Despite Valid Permits

On Thursday, the FCT Police Command commenced enforcement of vehicle tint regulations in the capital city, warning that drivers of tinted vehicles face arrest and prosecution regardless of permit ownership.

Ahmed Sanusi, the FCT Command’s Commissioner of Police, said the renewed enforcement of the campaign against tinted vehicles is aimed at curbing crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the nation’s capital.

“There is a total ban on the usage of tinted vehicles. We’re not looking at whether you have a tinted permit or you don’t have a tinted permit. Whether you have permit or not, if we get to you with your tinted vehicle, we will arrest you,” he said.

Sanusi argued that criminals often exploit tinted vehicles to conceal their identities and operations, making it difficult for law enforcement agencies and the public to detect criminal activities.
