This Bespoke Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Honors Charles Rolls’ 1906 Tourist Trophy Victory

Rolls-Royce has unveiled its latest one-off Bespoke commission: the Black Badge Ghost Tourist Trophy, which honors the 120th anniversary of Charles Stewart Rolls’ historic victory in the 1906 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy.

The bespoke Black Badge Ghost Tourist Trophy draws inspiration from the historic Light 20 H.P. Rolls-Royce, which was driven by Charles Rolls and his riding mechanic, Eric Platford, across four laps of the Isle of Man Highroads Course during the 1906 Tourist Trophy.

Despite starting fourth, Rolls and his mechanic built a 10-minute lead by the fourth and final lap to win the 1906 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Driving the 20 H.P. at an average speed of 39.4 mph, Rolls crossed the finish line after 4 hours, 6 minutes, and 0.06 seconds, with just one pint and one ounce of fuel remaining.

“Charles Rolls was a high-voltage Edwardian: experimental, audacious and moving faster than the world around him. His victory in the 1906 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy demonstrated both courage and discipline – a demanding course, limited fuel, a finely prepared motor car and an absolute belief in what machines could make possible,” said Alistair Barkley, Designer at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

The exterior of the Black Badge Ghost Tourist Trophy is finished in Dark Emerald, a color inspired by the green hue of the Light 20 H.P. Rolls-Royce driven by Rolls in the 1906 Tourist Trophy.

In addition, the exterior boasts a hand-painted Coachline motif featuring the number 4 in Arctic White, referencing both Rolls’ starting position for the race and his completion of four laps in just over four hours.

Inside, the cabin of Black Badge Ghost Tourist Trophy is highlighted by the rear Waterfall that carries an embroidered outline of the Isle of Man Short Highroads Course as well as bespoke Illuminated Treadplates fitted to all four door sills.

In addition, the central ‘eyeball’ air vents features engravings record details from the race-winning motor car and the event itself, including the registration number AX157, chassis number 26350B, race date 27.09.1906.
