Hamilton: There Has Never Been Someone Like Me In Formula 1
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has said he is unlike any driver Formula 1 has ever seen and reaffirmed his determination to continue competing in the coming years.
The seven-time world champion recently stated that he wants to stay in the sport in order to achieve his dream of racing in Africa, which he has been pushing for for many years, the BBC reported today.
Formula 1 has signed a ten-year contract with Rwanda, which will come into effect in the early 2030s. It will be the first race on this continent since 1993.
Hamilton is now 41 and will be at least 45 when that race takes place. However, at the press conference ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, he pointed out that he should be seen as a special case.
He said that Formula 1 had never had anyone like him in its 70 years of existence, adding that he was simply made differently.
– Of course, with age come challenges that I cannot foresee now. But, throughout my career, I have often encountered opinions such as that your reaction time deteriorates with age. Did you see my reaction time last race? “It was faster than some of the youngest drivers here,” said Hamilton. – As long as you are ready to sacrifice everything, and I am ready right now (although I cannot claim that in four years I will want to do what I am doing) I am fully committed. I will be in the foreseeable future.
The Ferrari driver is battling with four other drivers to finish the season second, behind clear leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, who is 21 years his junior.
Hamilton struggled during his first season at Ferrari, but this season has brought him a much more positive experience, including victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix in June.
He said that he has proven that he can still compete at the highest level.
– Time will tell if I will be here in the 2030s. I never want to stay longer than is desirable, in the sense that I don’t perform well… Last year everyone assumed that, and I proved them wrong. I will continue to try to keep it that way – said Hamilton.
The next Formula 1 race, the Mexican Grand Prix, takes place on Sunday from 21:00.
