The Lamborghini Diablo turns 35 this year and while the last examples rolled off the assembly line 24 years, the supercar continues to be remembered not only for its signature wedge silhouette and iconic scissor doors but also for its record-breaking feats.

Here are 10 things to know about the Lamborghini Diablo as compiled by Autojosh.

1. Year of debut

The Lamborghini Diablo was unveiled in 1990 in the Principality of Monaco at the opening of the Monte Carlo Rally as a replacement for the Countach, the Italian brand’s then flagship sports car.

2. Name

The supercar was named after a the legendary fighting bull of the same name, famous for fighting an epic battle against the matador José de Lara, known as “El Chicorro” in Madrid.

3. Powertrain

Diablo was powered by a 5.7-liter V12 engine, which delivers 485 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, paired to a five-speed manual transmission.

4. 0-62mph /Top-speed

Diablo could accelerate from rest to 62mph (100 km/h) in around 4.5 seconds and reach a top-speed of 209 mph (337 km/h) – a feat it achieved on the Nardò circuit to become the fastest road car in the world at the time.

5. Concept

Lamborghini began development of what was codenamed Project 132 in June 1985 with the aim to develop the fastest car in the world with at least a top-speed of 196 mph (315 km/h).

6. 2,903 examples produced until 2001

With 2,903 units produced from 1990 to 2001, the Diablo not only set an all-time sales record for Lamborghini up to 2001, but also contributed to strengthening the brand’s global reputation.

7. Most popular color – Red

While there were over 60 available colors, 40 of which could be customized, over 550 examples from the total 2,903 Diablos were finished in red – making it the most popular color.

8. Variants

Several variants of the Diablo was made over the eleven years of production, including the base model Diablo, Diablo VT Roadster, Diablo SV, Diablo GT, Diablo GTR and the SE30 model unveiled to celebrate Lamborghini’s 30th anniversary.

9. Global status symbol and dream car

As expected, the Diablo became the global status symbol and dream car for celebrities such as Jay Leno known for collecting cars and boxing legend Mike Tyson. Other notable owners included Dennis Rodman, Rod Stewart and Nicolas Cage.

10. Replacement Supercar

While it arrived in 1990 to replace the Countach, the legendary Diablo was replaced by the all-wheel drive, mid-engine Murcielago sports car that was produced from 2001 to 2010.
