From $31 million Rolls-Royce Droptail To $51.7 million 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, here’s Autojosh rundown of 5 most expensive purchases in 2023.

1) 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO / 330 LM

$51.7 Million

In November, a classic 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO / 330 LM chassis number 3765, dubbed ‘the holy grail of all collector cars’, was sold for a new record price of £42 million ($51.7million) during RM Sotheby’s auction in New York. The $51.7million paid makes the 1962 250 GTO the most expensive Ferrari sold at auction.

“Now, it ranks among the most expensive cars sold at auction, a true testament to its singular place in history,”says Gord Duff, Sotheby’s Global Head of Auctions, after the sale.

2) Rolls-Royce Droptail

$31.8 Million

Four unnamed clients reportedly paid $31.8 million each to own Rolls-Royce’s latest coachbuilt masterpiece, dubbed the Droptail – a price tag that makes the Droptail the most expensive new car in the world.

While the limited-edition Droptails share a common body style, including with a removable hard top with an electrochromic glass, each of the 4 comes with the unique, highly personal imprint of the commissioning patron.

3) Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

$28 million

In September, several recent media reported that Argentinian soccer star, Mauro Icardi, had splurged around $28 million to buy a coachbuilt Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, following the completion of his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Turkish football club Galatasaray.

The three clients who commissioned the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail remained anonymous up till now, though American music couple, Jay-Z and Beyonce had been rumoured to be one of the three customers.

4) 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 W04

$18.8 Million

Also in November, Lewis Hamilton’s first-winning ‘Silver Arrow’, a 2013 Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 W04, sold $18.8 million at a RM Sotheby’s auction block during the F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

While the $18.8 million price tag makes it the most expensive modern F1 car sold at auction, it still trails the amount paid in 2013 for a 1954 Mercedes W196R during a Bonhams auction.

5) ‘P7’ ‘world’s most expensive number plate’

$15 Million

In April, a ‘P7’ custom plate was auctioned off for a eye-watering $15 million during the Most Noble Numbers charity auction in oil rich Dubai, in United Arab Emirates.

During the auction, the P7 license plate was affixed to limited-edition Bugatti Divo hypercar worth $5.9 million, though the vanity ‘world’s most expensive number plate’ has now been spotted on a one-off Mansory Edition Cullinan.

6) Bugatti Chiron Profilée

$10.7 Million

In February, the first and only Bugatti Chiron Profilée secured its place in automotive history after been sold at an RM Sotheby’s auction in Paris for a record-breaking price of €9,792,500 (or about $10,767,441 at current exchange rates).

This groundbreaking sale not only make the rare hypercar the world’s most valuable Chiron, but the Profilée now stands as the most valuable new automotive model ever sold at auction.
