Mazda Is Seriously Contemplating A Potent Twin Turbo Wankel Engine

Mazda’s plans to revive rotary engines are a step closer to reality. The company is planning a Wankel engine, and now, engineers are confident they will design an engine that will pass the most stringent emissions regulations.

“I have decided to reopen the rotary engine development group,” Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro told Road & Track.

– It is important that we comply with strict emissions regulations such as LEV IV in the US and Euro 7.

Moro previously said that a single-rotor engine would not be powerful enough for the American audience, so he began developing a two-rotor powertrain.

– We know that the rotary engine is not good at respecting emissions; that was the reason why we decided to stop its production in 2012, said Moro.

–   But in the last year, progress has been encouraging.

Mazda is bringing the rotary engine back into production in 2023 as a range-extending generator for the MX-30 electric crossover. The twin-rotor system is likely to be used in a sports model. The model is said to be based on the Iconic SP concept (pictured).
