The Mazda MX-5 (Miata) May Become An EV

The future of the Mazda MX-5 Miata remains uncertain, with key questions regarding its transition to electric power, the retention of a manual transmission, and the longevity of its internal combustion engine.

Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro has hinted that the next-generation Miata could eventually go electric. While the company remains committed to maintaining the car’s signature lightweight design and isn’t abandoning internal combustion just yet, electrification is being actively considered for the roadster’s future.

The Japanese automaker remains committed to a lightweight MX-5. CEO Masahiro Moro confirmed the next generation targets 2,200–2,645 lbs without expensive materials, noting that current battery tech makes gas engines the only viable option for maintaining that signature weight.

Mazda’s recent patent reveals a unique EV layout for the next-gen MX-5, placing battery cells in the transmission tunnel and behind the seats to maintain weight distribution and rear-wheel drive. While challenges remain, Mazda is actively engineering the future of this iconic sports car.
