A trending video online showing Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, and two young men with a black Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G-Wagon) fitted with a custom number plate has sparked debate over the civilian use of official vehicle registration plates.

While the high-performance, high-riding Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV somehow stole the spotlight in the short clip, what really captured the attention of many was the custom Nigerian Police licence plate fitted to the SUV driven by the self-determination activist.

Nicknamed after his hometown, Igboho, and known for his advocacy for an independent Yoruba Nation, Sunday Igboho initially rose to fame following his role in the Modakeke-Ife communal crisis between 1997 and 1998, where he played an active part in defending the Modakeke people.

Despite being an activist and the head of Iru Ekun (which translates to “Leopard’s Tail”) Security Network, Igboho has never been shy about flaunting some of the expensive rides in his garage on social media, which are fitted with customised plates.

Before now, Igboho’s garage has housed a Rolls-Royce Ghost, as well as the Nigerian celebrities’ favourite, a Mercedes-Benz G-Class (G-Wagon). His collection has also included a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, a Mercedes-Benz GLE and a Range Rover SUV.

In a live chat with Nigerian journalist and publisher of Ovation International, Dele Momodu, while dismissing a claim, Igboho suggested that his love for cars may be connected to his car dealership business, through which he ships vehicles into Nigeria from Germany and America.

“When I was hustling I had a company for about fifteen years ago, a company that sells cars. I started buying cars from Cotonou, then started buying from Germany, America, London; I travelled around to bring them,” he said in a quote read by Autojosh.
