Mercedes-Benz Believes There Are Growing Prospects In The Defence Sector
Mercedes-Benz sees growth opportunities in its defense activities through the development of special vehicles for military use and rescue missions. Currently, less than 1 percent of the company’s total revenue comes from the sale of such vehicles, but Mercedes aims to increase this.
Board member Michael Schiebe said on Thursday that the company views defense as a strategic sector for development and that it wants to enter into collaborations with partner companies to grow further. The group has been manufacturing specially adapted vehicles for military use for more than 45 years, for example, for the German army.
For example, Mercedes G-Class off-road vehicles are used by armies in more than fifty different versions, ranging from medical vehicles to variants for use by special forces. Mercedes Sprinter vans are also deployed for military and security purposes.
Mercedes concluded another cooperation deal with the German start-up Tytan Technologies on Wednesday. As part of this, Mercedes will supply transport vehicles for a drone defense system. These vehicles will then transport Tytan interceptor drones. The G-Class vehicles will be equipped with special equipment such as radar and sensors for this purpose.
