Mercedes, Freightliner Issue Recall for 254,800 Vehicles
Mercedes and Daimler Vans have been installing the eCall emergency call system in their cars since 2012, and its widespread use in both automakers’ lineups is why their latest recall affects 254,800 vehicles.
A mobile network connection failure caused by an issue in the communication module’s subscriber identification module card software can disable the eCall system.
In an emergency, a disabled eCall system could prohibit someone from calling the emergency services call center, thereby delaying rescuers and raising the risk of injury.
Vehicles affected by the recall include model-year 2017-22 Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach CLA, GLA, GLE, GLS, SLC, A-Class, AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL-Class, GLC, CLS, GLB, G-Class, Metris and Sprinter vehicles, as well as Freightliner Sprinter vans.
The solution is available in two forms: as an over-the-air update or through a dealer. Owners of Mercedes cars and SUVs will be contacted on July 19, while owners of Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner vans will be told on June 20.
Owners of Mercedes cars and SUVs should contact Mercedes-Benz at 800-367-6372, while owners of Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner vans should contact Daimler Vans at 877-762-8267.
