Nissan Qashqai Will Not Go Electric
Nissan is putting a stop to the development of the electric Qashqai. The electric Nissan Qashqai was supposed to roll off the production line in the United Kingdom, but that is not going to happen.
In 2023, Nissan announced a trio of new electric models. One of them is already on sale: the new Leaf. We are still waiting for the final unveiling of the equally electric Juke, of which we have only seen the exterior. Two years ago, Nissan also mentioned the arrival of a fully electric Qashqai. That will not be happening, Reuters reports, citing multiple insiders.
The fact that the Nissan Qashqai, of all cars, will not receive an electric successor seems somewhat remarkable. The Qashqai has proven to be a great success in Europe. In the Netherlands, the Qashqai has been Nissan’s most popular model continuously since the market introduction of the first generation in 2007. Recently, the brand already scrapped the electric Ariya and indicated that it intends to focus primarily on the Micra, Leaf, and the aforementioned new Juke. According to insiders spoken to by Reuters, development of the electric Qashqai has reportedly been halted. Even if Nissan were to decide to launch an electric Qashqai after all, it would not be ready for the market before 2030, the two sources interviewed reason.
In a response to Reuters, Nissan stated that it is aiming for a lineup featuring both electric and hybrid models and that the European market is quite volatile. In other words, the hybrid has a longer future than previously estimated by Nissan.
Although there is no electric version of the current generation Nissan Qashqai, you can buy an electrically powered Qashqai: the Qashqai e-Power. It has a petrol engine that acts as a generator for a small battery pack. The wheels, however, are always driven by an electric motor.
