Production Of The Polestar 2 Ends With A Successor Set For Next Year
According to European media, the last new Polestar 2 rolled off the production line of the company’s factory in Luqiao, China.
This news was first reported by the Norwegian media TV 2 Broom, after Polestar in that country – as well as in its home market, Sweden – stopped receiving factory orders for its model, which is a competitor to the Tesla Model 3.
Since the introduction of the electric model in 2020, more than 200,000 examples of the all-electric sedan with hatchback body elements have been produced. Although the company has yet to confirm this information with an official statement, the news fits in with previously announced plans to introduce the upgraded Polestar 2 in 2027, followed by the all-new Polestar 7 SUV, which is scheduled to arrive in early 2028.
The successor to the Polestar 2 will play a key role in the brand’s bid to reach 100,000 annual sales by the end of the decade, up from the 60,000 it sold in 2025.
Polestar has already announced a sleek new design for the new generation Model 2, which will be slightly longer than the current car, which is 4.6 meters long, and will be more obviously aimed at younger buyers. Polestar is looking to expand its target customer group, stating that the average age of its current customers is 45.
Production in China will continue, but Polestar has not yet confirmed whether the new generation will retain Geely’s modular CMA platform.
It shares this platform with the Volvo model XC40, and it is a flexible architecture that can support internal combustion engines, hybrid and electric drive systems. On the other hand, the Polestar 4 uses Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture platform, dedicated exclusively to electric cars.
The new Polestar 2 will be the first production car designed by Philipp Römers, who joined Polestar early last year as a replacement for Max Missoni, the man responsible for shaping the brand’s current model range.
In the coming weeks, Römers will hint at the appearance of the new Polestar 2, as well as the upcoming Polestar 7 crossover, with the presentation of a bold concept car called Formula 2030, which will demonstrate a “bold evolution” of the Swedish brand’s design language.
The first information suggests that Römers will maintain a mostly minimalistic and unobtrusive design approach to future Polestar cars, while introducing a lower and wider silhouette, with a more pronounced influence of aerodynamic principles.
As Autocar writes, it is expected that his modernization of the Polestar design will be an evolution, not a revolution, and that the new Polestar 2 will clearly resemble the successor of the current car in appearance.
