Rolls-Royce celebrates triple anniversaries of Goodwood-era Experimental Concept Cars – the 101EX, 102EX and the 103EX. 

The trio of Rolls-Royce Experimental (EX) motor cars turns 20, 15 and 10 years since their respective unveilings. 

This year, Rolls-Royce marks a special anniversary of the 101EX, 102EX and the 103EX concept cars – which are three groundbreaking Experimental (EX) cars built during the Goodwood-era when full-scale manufacturing began at its new home in 2003, following the BMW’s acquisition of the brand.

The trio of Experimental (EX) motor cars turns 20, 15 and 10 years since their respective unveilings, each playing a foundational role in establishing Rolls-Royce’s contemporary design language, technology and engineering hallmarks.

101EX, Unveiled In 2006

101EX made its debut at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. The four-seat coupé with twin coach doors uses the same aluminium spaceframe as Phantom VII while power comes from a 6.75-litre V12 engine.

The 101EX not only found lasting fame as a series production car – the Phantom Coupé but also gave designers and engineers vital insights into the development of the first Coachbuild project of the modern era : Sweptail, presented in 2017.

102EX, Unveiled In 2011

Unveiled at 2006 Geneva Motor Show, the 102EX, also known as the Phantom Experimental Electric (EE), is Rolls-Royce’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV) created as a one-off, working test bed for alternative drive-train technologies.

Featuring what was then the largest capacity battery fitted to a motor car anywhere in the world and a world’s first wireless induction charging system, the 102EX no doubt helped in the creation of the brand’s first production electric cat, the Spectre.

103EX, Unveiled In 2016

Unveiled in 2016, the marque’s special 103EX also known as Vision Next 100 boasts a an interior known as ‘The Grand Sanctuary’, which surrounds occupants with precious and contemporary materials.

Powered by an all-electric powertrain and boasting the same dimensions as Phantom Extended, the 103EX features a digital assistant called ‘Eleanor’, which enables fully autonomous driving.
