Throwback : A royal guard chauffeur stands in front of Queen Elizabeth’s Rolls-Royce during her trip to Lagos, Nigeria.

Fitted on the Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith is the “Royal Standard flag of Queen Elizabeth II”, which indicates the Queen’s presence.

During her first visit, a Rolls-Royce Phantom IV ‘Landaulett’ was used to chauffeur her to meet the then Oba of Lagos.

One of several vehicles shipped into the country for the tour, this particular Phantom IV ‘Landaulett’ was used to chauffeur the Queen and her husband from airport to meet the then Oba of Lagos, Oba Adeniji Adele ll.

The photograph was taken during the British monarch’s first visit to Nigeria, which was then still under British rule. Her tour of Nigeria occurred just four years before Nigeria gained independence in 1960.

During her first visit to Nigeria in 1956, a a 1952 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith reportedly owned by the then-Emir of Kano, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi I, was also used by the Queen, though another school of thought believed it was borrowed from Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on 8 September 2022 at the ripe age of 96. Her royal tour to Nigeria in 1956 was part of her Commonwealth tour, aimed at strengthening ties with Britain’s colonies.
