Toyota Motor Europe is launching the Circular Factory initiative in the UK. The aim is recycling, remanufacturing, and reusing parts from used cars.

The first circular part facility will open at TMUK’s existing Barnaston plant in the third quarter of this year. Toyota expects it to become a center of excellence for future recycling operations across Europe and globally. The Toyota Circular Factory will work in three main areas.

Reuse of parts: after inspection, some components will be returned to the market through retailers or parts distributors.

Recovery and recycling: batteries and rims will be evaluated for reuse or recycling. Material recycling: copper, aluminium, steel, and plastic will be recycled to produce new parts. This will replace raw materials as much as possible.

In the first phase in the UK, Toyota plans to recycle 10,000 vehicles a year, remanufacture 120,000 parts, collect 300 tonnes of plastic, and save 8,200 tonnes of steel.

Toyota’s vice president for circular economy, Leon van der Merwe, said the company plans to expand this approach across Europe. The Japanese auto giant says it is ready to collaborate with other companies that share the principles of environmental responsibility. The initiative will run in parallel with the core operations of TMUK’s Barnaston plant to produce the Toyota Corolla model.

Toyota Motor Europe pledges to become a fully carbon-neutral company by 2040 and plans to achieve carbon neutrality across all of its facilities by 2030. Toyota also aims to achieve a 100 percent reduction in CO2 emissions across its entire European product offering by 2035.
