Volkswagen Is Thinking About Making Military Vehicles

Volkswagen is considering the production of military vehicles at its plant in Osnabrück, and two prototypes of military vehicles based on Volkswagen’s “Amarok” and “Crafter” models have already been developed under strict secrecy.

The German auto manufacturer confirmed the development of prototypes but did not provide details on future plans, Wirtschaftswoche reports.

According to information from the “Noje Osnabricker Zeitung” newspaper, the prototypes of military vehicles MV.1 and MV.2 were created internally at the factory and are still experimental objects.

“Amarok” is a medium-sized pickup truck, an all-terrain truck designed for the transport of goods, off-road work, and military or commercial modifications. The pickup construction allows the installation of armor, additional equipment, and weapons, and with the 4×4 drive, it easily passes through inaccessible terrain.

“Crafter” is a large van that is mainly used for cargo transport, van transport, and emergency services. For the needs of the army, it is possible to transform it into a command vehicle, an ambulance, an armored vehicle, and other specialized vehicles.

The factory in Osnabrück currently employs around 2,300 workers; the current production ends in the middle of 2027, and it has been mentioned for a long time that the military conglomerate Rheinmetall could start production in this facility, reports Tanjug.
