China Set To Build Electric SUV For Jeep Globally
Stellantis is reviving Jeep production in China through a new partnership with Dongfeng. The collaboration will leverage local EV technology to manufacture electrified vehicles starting in 2027, marking the first time Chinese-made Jeeps will be exported to global markets.
This strategic shift marks a significant turning point for Stellantis, which ceased local production in 2022 following a decline in sales. By re-entering the Chinese market through a modernized partnership model, the company aims to rectify its previous challenges while positioning China as a cost-effective, high-tech export hub for global distribution by 2027.
Stellantis and Dongfeng have launched an 8.2 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) joint venture, Dongfeng Stellantis Automotive Technology Co., based in Wuhan. The partnership will use DPCA facilities to produce four new models, including two Peugeot vehicles and two electrified Jeep SUVs.
Under the agreement, Dongfeng will lead R&D and provide EV architectures and intelligent tech, while Stellantis contributes its brand heritage, design, and global distribution. CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed production of these electric SUVs and hybrids will begin in 2027 for worldwide export. Dongfeng’s expertise in premium EVs and heavy-duty off-roaders provides the technical foundation needed to develop these new, robust Jeep models.
Jeep’s return to China via a Dongfeng partnership highlights the industry’s shift toward domestic EV technology. After the collapse of its previous venture, Stellantis is now leveraging Chinese R&D to accelerate EV development and reduce costs. By using China as a high-tech export hub for electrified Jeeps starting in 2027, the company is mirroring the strategies of Volkswagen and GM to remain competitive in the global EV transition.
