German automaker Mercedes-Benz is celebrating 30 years since the first-ever V8-powered G-Class, the 500 GE, was unveiled at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show as the new top-of-the-range engine for the G model.

Based on the W463 model series Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen launched in 1989, the 500 GE V8 variant of the formidable SUV established the G worldwide as a luxury off-road vehicle back in 1993.

While today’s base G550 comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 delivering 416 horsepower and 577-hp in the potent G63, the 500 GE V8 develops 177 kW (240 hp) and 375 newton metres of torque, allowing a top speed of 180 km/h, while acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h was achieved in 11.4 seconds.

The 500 GE V8 is fitted with 16-inch Bridgestone tyres, an off-road tyres approved for speeds of up to 210 kph (130 mph) and a revised anti-lock braking system to complement its greater performance.

Other distinct features on this variant include a black leather interior and equipments like air conditioning, a sliding sunroof, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats, and an automatic transmission.

Just only 446 examples of the Mercedes-Benz 500 GE V8 were ever built between 1993 and 1994, with the brand citing the number of M-117 engines available as the reason for the limited edition vehicles.
