Police in Italy found 40 stolen cars in shipping containers in Italy on Wednesday morning.
The vehicles were stolen throughout the Greater Toronto Area in Canada. Their destinations were Libya and Turkey.
They were recovered after Canadian border officials and Italian police officers stopped them. They were stopped at two Italian ports in Salerno and Tauro. This was after officials at Polizia di Stato, the national police of Italy had been notified.

In a news release, York Regional Police announced that the vehicles were found during an investigation with the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Italian National Police.
Officials were first alerted to the whereabouts of the vehicles when the CBSA flagged a suspicious export of a 2018 Audi Q7, police said.
Investigators later discovered several other vehicles involved, many of them destined for oversea countries.
Thirty of the vehicles were seized at the Italian ports. Another 10 were seized by the CBSA before they could be exported from Canada. The vehicles seized in Italy are worth approximately $1.5 million, according to police. The other vehicles are worth more than $300,000.
In total, police identified 40 vehicles obtained by fraud or stolen from York Region and the GTA. They were all valued at $1.5 million.
The vehicles included Camaros’, Mercedes’, an SUV, a Jeep Land Rover and more.
Furthermore, after a search warrant was executed by officers at the offices of RS Royal Services, located on Bakersfield Street in Toronto, additional vehicles are being investigated as part of this case.
“This investigation is ongoing,” police said.
