Ugandan General Injured As Gunmen Sprays His Land Cruiser SUV, Daughter, Driver Killed (PHOTOS)

Former Ugandan General, now a Minister, Wamala injured as gunmen on bikes sprayed his Land Cruiser SUV with bullets.

His daughter and driver killed during the assassination attempt near his home on Tuesday. 

Former Ugandan General Katumba Wamala was taken to hospital on Tuesday with bullet wounds after gunmen attacked the Toyota Land Cruiser he was driving in.

During the assassination attempt in the Kampala suburb of Kiasasi, near his home, his daughter and driver were killed. According to reports, Wamala was shot in the upper parts of his body around the arms and shoulders.

According to local news, four attackers on motorcycles opened fire at a vehicle carrying General Edward Katumba Wamala, who is the Minister of works and transport.

“There was a shooting involving him … he is hurt and he’s been taken to the hospital, his driver was killed,” army spokeswoman Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso said.

Images circulating on social media showed a distressed and bloodied Katumba, apparently from his wounds, standing next to a Land Cruiser SUV. Other images shared includes a riddled SUV with bullet holes on the window, which shows the vehicle is unarmoured.

There have been several assassinations and mysterious deaths of high profile officials in the east African country in recent years, fuelling speculation about perpetrators and their motivations.

Victims have involved a lawmaker, a senior police officer, the country’s top public prosecutor, senior Muslim leaders and others.

The attempt on Katumba was orchestrated in the same suburb in the capital where in 2017 gunmen on motorcycles sprayed bullets on a vehicle carrying a senior police officer. That police officer, Felix Kaweesa, was killed along with his bodyguard and driver.
