A solar-powered ambulance called Stella Juva has completed a major real-world trial in Kenya, demonstrating how sunlight could help bring medical care to remote areas where reliable infrastructure, electricity, and fuel are lacking.

Stella Juva was developed by 23 students from Solar Team Eindhoven at Eindhoven University of Technology, who described it as the world’s first ambulance designed to run entirely on solar energy while also powering medical equipment.

The solar ambulance generates energy through solar panels on its roof and extendable panels on its sides while stationary. While stationary, Stella Juva can generate more solar energy than it consumes while operating all its medical equipment simultaneously, according to the team.

During its Kenyan field trial, Stella Juva covered more than 800 kilometres across the Narok region, travelling on both paved and unpaved roads. The team also drove for about six hours to reach the remote location of Mosiro over challenging terrain.

While its creators call it an ambulance, Stella Juva operates more like a mobile health clinic. Unlike conventional ambulances, Stella Juva is equipped with medical equipment, including an X-ray machine, ultrasound scanner, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and cooling equipment for vaccines.

During a two-day medical test, the vehicle reportedly helped healthcare professionals provide care to around 200 people. “It is really great for the team to see the potential of Stella Juva in practice,” said team manager Mathijs van Gerven.

“Not only to drive sustainably, but also to be able to provide fully independent care. Especially in remote areas where energy is often scarce, this can make all the difference.”

The solar-powered ambulance completed its journey despite a broken steering rod, which was replaced within 30 minutes. The project now offers a glimpse of how solar-powered mobility could support healthcare delivery in off-grid communities.
