Why This Emergency Doctor Uses Rapid-response Porsche Macan GTS Instead Of An Ambulance

Porsche celebrates Dr. John Ferris, an emergency medicine consultant who volunteers for BEEP Doctors and mountain rescue teams, delivering hospital-level care in extreme environments, from mountainsides to remote valleys.
For Ferris, reaching patients quickly across his patch—covering everything from coastal towns to dramatic valleys and imposing fells—demands not an ambulance but a high-performance machine like his trusted rapid-response Porsche Macan GTS.

“People think of the Lake District as a quiet rural area and the resident population isn’t big,” Ferris explains, “but at peak times we have enormous numbers of people visiting–nearly 10 million people annually–and lots come here for high-risk activities.”
Knowing the distinction between life and death often comes down to seconds, Ferris knows that it is important to bring life-saving care directly to patients—wherever they may be. “My niche is taking the sort of intensive-care treatment normally provided in a hospital into very remote settings,” he says.

His rapid-response Porsche Macan GTS is discreetly modified with blue and green emergency lights and a siren. It is equipped with winter tyres and snow chains during winter, allowing Ferris to navigate traffic quickly when responding to urgent calls.
“It’s a vehicle that combines enough space to put everything you need in the boot with the speed, overtaking ability and power you need to do emergency-response driving safely,” Ferris says. “There aren’t many vehicles that tick all those boxes.”

But Ferris’s rapid-response Porsche Macan GTS pulls double duty, as the versatile luxury SUV serves not only as a swift track-day weapon and a literal lifesaver, but also as the family’s everyday car. “That’s the other side of the Macan: it also has to work as a practical family car that we can take on holiday to France with the kids. It’s very versatile,” said Ferris.
Dr. Ferris’s rapid-response Porsche Macan is powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine. The 434-horsepower SUV has a top speed of 169 mph (272 km/h), ensuring his rapid response to even the most remote areas.
