BMW’s Manual Transmission On Its M Cars Is In Trouble Due To Mild-Hybrid Technology
BMW M’s manual transmissions face an uncertain future as 48-volt mild-hybrid systems and declining supplier support make continued production increasingly difficult.
Frank van Meel (BMW M’s boss) warns that 48-volt mild-hybrid systems are technically incompatible with manual transmissions, casting doubt on the future of stick-shift M models as the brand integrates hybrid tech.
48-volt mild-hybrid systems integrate tightly with transmission software to optimize performance and fuel efficiency. This precise synchronization is difficult to achieve with manual gearboxes due to unpredictable human shifting.
Within BMW’s M lineup, manual transmissions are becoming increasingly restricted. The S58 six-cylinder engine generates torque levels that exceed the capacity of current manual gearboxes in their most powerful configurations, which accounts for the absence of manual transmissions in the M3 and M4 Competition models. Similarly, both the M2 xDrive and the M2 CS are restricted to BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission.
This shift raises significant concerns among enthusiasts regarding the upcoming G84 M3, anticipated for a 2028 release. As the vehicle is expected to incorporate a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, the feasibility of retaining a manual transmission is in jeopardy. While BMW has yet to issue a formal confirmation, achieving the necessary technical integration between hybrid systems and manual gearboxes appears increasingly unlikely.
Despite strong demand from M enthusiasts, the future of BMW’s manual transmissions is in jeopardy due to the integration of 48-volt mild-hybrid systems, high engineering costs, and diminishing supplier support. Fans should consider securing a manual M3 or M4 now while they remain available.
