Volkswagen Says A New ID.Buzz Is Coming And It Will Be Better And Cheaper
Volkswagen is committed to the ID. Buzz, confirming future updates and an all-new, more affordable successor built on the SSP platform to improve market appeal and technology.
A next-generation ID. Buzz built on its Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) to improve affordability and technology. By transitioning from the MEB platform and potentially utilizing LFP batteries, VW aims to reduce production costs and address the current model’s slow sales and pricing challenges. While specific details remain undisclosed, the successor will prioritize range, faster charging, and improved software to broaden market appeal.
Future ID. Buzz models should adopt the more ergonomic, user-friendly cabins found in newer VW vehicles. By replacing touch-sensitive sliders with physical controls and intuitive layouts—like individual window switches—Volkswagen can improve functionality without sacrificing the van’s iconic character. These practical, driver-focused refinements should be prioritized to ensure the next-generation ID. Buzz is as easy to operate as it is stylish.
Volkswagen faces the challenge of evolving the iconic ID. Buzz design without relying solely on nostalgia. While maintaining the van’s unique personality is key, design chief Andreas Mindt cautions against repeating retro looks, using the modern Beetle as a warning. As a result, VW aims to refine the ID. Buzz. Buzz’s identity for future generations to ensure it remains fresh rather than derivative.
The next-gen ID. Buzz, based on the SSP platform, is expected after 2030, following a flagship VW SUV. Until then, Volkswagen will refine the current model with software updates and more accessible configurations. While the van’s high price remains a challenge, its strong design and sales—which doubled to 60,700 units last year—keep it a key part of the brand. In the U.S., the model is slated to return for the 2028 model year, while European versions are already seeing ergonomic upgrades like physical steering wheel controls.
