Due to weight, drivers could be forced to undergo training for licenses to drive the heavy armored BMW i7 EV.
Sources has informed Forbes that BMW is working on BMW i7 Protection, an armored version of its super-luxury i7 xDrive60 all-electric limousine that is due to be revealed later this year.
An armored i7 Protection isn’t on BMW agenda at the time of unveiling in April, but the sources said BMW took interest in an armored i7 following Russian invasion of Ukraine.
An official announcement on German premium automaker’s first official armored electric car is likely to be made after this month’s G7 economic summit in Germany, according to the source.
While details are scarce, sources suggest there will be different levels of protection, from small-arms fire to protection from heavier ordinance.
The armor in the i7 Protection will add at least another 1500 pounds. BMW has already admitted the difference between the six-cylinder 7 Series and the big-battery i7 may be around 1,100 pounds.
Due to its weight, which could be in excess of four tons, drivers could be forced to undergo training for licenses to drive the heavy armored BMW i7 Protection.
While the unarmored i7 will be able to cover 380 miles between charges, the armored version will have to pack more battery-pack – adding even more weight – to be able to achieve this range.
